Rich and creamy dark chocolate hot chocolate made with real dark chocolate and cocoa powder. This easy stovetop recipe delivers a bold, smooth mug that’s cozy, balanced, and not overly sweet.
In a medium saucepan, whisk together the milk, cocoa powder, and brown sugar until the cocoa is fully dissolved. Set the pan over medium heat and warm the mixture gently, stirring occasionally, until it’s hot and smooth but not boiling - this should take about 3 to 4 minutes.
Lower the heat and add the chopped dark chocolate. Whisk continuously until the chocolate has completely melted and the hot chocolate is glossy and uniform. Remove from the heat, stir in the vanilla extract, and give it a final taste to adjust sweetness if needed.
Divide between mugs and serve immediately. Finish with whipped cream and chocolate shavings, if desired.
